Can he see out?

I read this book in the 3rd grade and was disappointed by the amount of pictures. I was expecting a large book with occasional pictures, but instead I got a book with around 100 pages of pictures in the very beginning. I think that the ideas behind the story are very good and imaginative, but some of that gets lost in the pictures. I would recommend this book if you can understand pictures and appreciate art.

I was getting braces and my grandmother got me this book to keep me from getting worried about the "big day". I read it and it is so much more than a graphic novel about tooth problems, but a journey through middle school and high school, from the perspective of a normal San-Francisco girl. Through this book Raina is constantly overcoming battles, and I think that this teaches people that anything is possible and that they can survive middle school ;) I love the novel and have reread it many times. It is written in a humorous and clever way, that makes you want to read it over and over again.

It is very light reading and is good if you like to read passively. I found that this book is too girly for me and has not enough content for my tastes. I think that it has more of an empty meaning than I would like, and focuses too much on the stereotypical life of a preteen girl. I think that the author should try to break out of the realm of the Popularity Ladder, and other girl issues, like boys. I would recommend this book if you read it to occupy your mind, not for an educational purpose.
